What to Wear with a Khaki Maxi Trench Coat: A Parisian Look with Amber

REPULO’S · · 8 min read

Khaki can look stern, but in a maxi length it turns soft and very feminine. Here we break down the look from our Paris shoot: the Amber trench coat with a pleated back, a chocolate turtleneck, leather gloves and a leopard pillbox hat. We show why the combination works and how to recreate it with what is already in your wardrobe.

In short

  • Colours: cream, beige, chocolate brown and black. A warm palette softens khaki.
  • Shoes: beige pointed-toe heels for polish, black loafers for the city, tall boots for cold days.
  • Proportions: a tied belt, an open front in motion and a visible shoe line.
  • Accessories: gold, brown leather and a single leopard accent.
Palette

Which colours go with a khaki trench coat?

Khaki works best with warm neutrals: cream, beige and chocolate brown, with black as a graphic accent.

Khaki has a warm, olive base, so cool shades fade next to it while browns and sandy tones bring out its depth. In the Paris look, the Amber trench is paired with a chocolate turtleneck, brown leather gloves and a beige suede bag. The palette stays narrow, but the textures change: soft suede, smooth leather and the crisp lines of the pleats. That contrast of textures is what keeps the outfit alive with so few colours.

  • Cream. A turtleneck, shirt or silk scarf near the face makes the look lighter and more daytime.
  • Beige. The easiest partner for khaki: bag, shoes, gloves. Choose suede or matte leather to echo the texture of the trench.
  • Chocolate brown. A turtleneck under the trench, as in the shoot, gives a rich warm base and makes the outfit read as one deliberate set.
  • Black. In small doses: sunglasses, loafers, a bag strap. Black adds a graphic edge but should not compete with the khaki.

Leopard as the statement

The leopard pillbox hat is what makes this outfit. Its sand, brown and black spots repeat the colours of the other accessories and stand out against khaki. To borrow the trick, one leopard piece is enough: a hat, a scarf or a small bag. Two is already too many.

Shoes

Which shoes to wear with a long trench coat?

Both heels and flats work with a long trench coat. What matters is that the shoes show below the hem.

The Amber trench ends just above the ankle, so every pair of shoes visibly changes the mood. Here are three options we tested on the shoot and in everyday outfits.

Heels

Pointed-toe pumps

Beige slingbacks on a low heel lengthen the leg and continue the vertical line of the trench.

Polished, for meetings and dinner
Flats

Loafers

Black patent loafers make the look more relaxed and easy for walking around the city, and the black echoes the sunglasses.

Tall boots

Brown boots in smooth leather slip under the hem and seem to continue the coat. Choose a slim shaft and a slender heel.

Silhouette

How to wear a maxi trench coat and keep your proportions?

Define the waist with the belt, choose the right length and let the coat move.

Belt at the waist

A roomy top with raglan sleeves and wide lapels only balances out with a clear waist. Tie the belt and let the ends hang loose: vertical lines visually lengthen the silhouette.

The right length

The Amber trench coat comes in two lengths, 135 and 140 cm. Standard sizes are cut for a height of 168–173 cm (5′6″–5′8″). If you are shorter or taller, you can order it made to measure from your own measurements, so the hem falls exactly where it should.

An open front

As you walk, the front panels part and show your legs. That keeps a long silhouette from looking heavy and gives the look movement.

A visible shoe line

Leave at least a few centimetres between the hem and your shoes. If the coat hides your shoes completely, the figure looks shorter.

The pleated back: a detail made for movement

From the front, Amber looks like a classic double-breasted trench, while the whole back below the belt is pleated. Standing still, it is a quiet texture; in motion it opens like a wave with every step. That is why the look is best seen walking, as in the shot below.

Which accessories finish the look?

Gold, brown leather and dark sunglasses. Accessories should echo the hardware of the trench.

The main jewel of Amber is already on it: gold shell-shaped buttons on the double-breasted front and the cuffs. Start from them when you choose the rest.

  • Gold jewellery. Gold earrings or a ring pick up the buttons. Silver feels colder here.
  • Leather gloves. Brown, to match the turtleneck. They carry the warm line from neck to hands and finish the look.
  • Dark sunglasses. A black cat-eye frame adds a retro mood and balances the black loafers.
  • Bag. Beige suede or soft leather. A drawstring bucket bag or a long-strap bag does not break the silhouette.
  • The red loop by the collar. A small detail of the trench that shows when the collar is open. Pick it up with a red lip.

Formula

How to recreate the Parisian look from your own wardrobe?

Take the shoot’s formula as a base and swap in what you already own.

One more option from the shoot: button the trench all the way and tie the belt. Amber then reads as a coat dress, with no need for trousers or a skirt underneath.

Questions

Khaki maxi trench coat: FAQ

What to wear with a khaki trench coat?

Cream, beige, chocolate brown and black pieces. The simplest formula: a chocolate or cream turtleneck, beige shoes or a beige bag, brown leather gloves and gold jewellery.

Which shoes go with a long trench coat?

Pointed-toe pumps on a low heel, loafers or tall leather boots. The key is that the shoe line shows below the hem.

Can petite women wear a maxi trench coat?

Yes, if the hem ends above the ankle and the waist is defined with the belt. Standard sizes of the REPULO’S Amber trench are cut for a height of 168–173 cm; for other heights it can be made to measure from your measurements in 7–12 business days.

How do you define the waist in a long trench coat?

Tie the belt at your natural waistline and let the ends hang loose. On the Amber trench the belt runs through belt loops, so it stays in place as you move.

What weather is the Amber trench coat for?

The Amber trench is made of a lined coat fabric, so it suits spring and autumn. On colder days, wear a thin sweater or turtleneck underneath.

How do you care for a pleated trench coat?

Dry clean only. Machine washing can damage the pleat folds and the structure of the fabric.

More about the coat itself, its cut and choosing a colour: khaki maxi trench coat with a pleated back.

Khaki, gold and moving pleats. Nothing more is needed.
