One scarf, seven looks: from fringe down the back to a scarf paired with an evening maxi dress.
In short

Knowing how to tie a scarf well comes down to three moves: fold it in half and pull the ends through the loop, wrap it once around your neck, or simply drape it over your shoulders. Every other style builds on these. Look for a length of at least 180 cm, and 200 cm or more if you want to wear it as a top.

A long scarf may be the most underrated piece in a winter wardrobe. In the morning it keeps you warm under a coat, in the evening it stands in for a stole, and at a New Year’s Eve party it can become your top. If you have ever wondered how to wear a long scarf beyond a simple wrap, here are seven ways we use ourselves on shoots and in the atelier, each one step by step, with ideas on what to wear it with.

Before you startHow long does a scarf need to be to tie it?

Most knots need at least 180 cm. Anything shorter really only works for a single wrap. For a scarf top or a belt, go for 200 cm or more: the fabric has to wrap around your body and still leave enough at the ends for a knot.

Width matters too. A narrow scarf, up to 20 cm, gives a neat knot without adding bulk, while a wide one drapes more dramatically but makes a chunkier knot. Our Women’s Velvet Fringe Scarf Lure is 17 cm wide and 250 cm long including the fringe: 150 cm of velvet plus 50 cm of fringe at each end. That is enough for all seven ways.

Black velvet fringe scarf folded into a loop

How do you tie a scarf in a Parisian knot?

Everyday · coat, trench, jumper

The easiest and warmest way. The scarf sits snugly around your neck and stays in place all day.

  1. Fold the scarf in half lengthways.
  2. Drape it around your neck, with the loop on one side and the two loose ends on the other.
  3. Pull both ends through the loop and tighten gently.

Don’t pull the loop right up to your chin. Leave a few centimetres of slack and it looks softer.

How do you wear a scarf over your shoulders?

Evening, theatre · bare shoulders

Draped over the shoulders, a scarf replaces a stole or jacket and pulls an evening look together. It works best with bare shoulders or thin straps.

  1. Open the scarf out to its full width.
  2. Lay it across your back at shoulder-blade level.
  3. Let the ends fall forward through the crooks of your elbows or simply over your shoulders.

How do you wear a scarf with a coat?

Everyday · open coat, blazer

With a coat, a single wrap looks best: the scarf keeps your neck warm while the ends fall along the front opening and visually lengthen your silhouette.

  1. Wrap the scarf once around your neck.
  2. Adjust the ends so one is slightly longer than the other.
  3. Leave them hanging loose at the front, over your open coat.

With a long coat such as the Velvet Belted Coat Lure, you can tuck the ends under the belt: the scarf stays put and the whole look feels pulled together.

How do you tie a scarf around your neck in a knot?

Office, dinner · shirt, roll neck

A front knot for a shirt, a roll neck or a simple black dress. Here the scarf works as jewellery, in place of a necklace.

  1. Wrap the scarf once around your neck, with the ends at the front.
  2. Tie them in a simple knot just below your collarbones.
  3. Arrange the ends so one lies over the other.
A scarf can finish a look. Sometimes it is the look.

How do you wear a fringe scarf down your back?

Party, photo shoot · open back

The most striking way for a special occasion: the ends are thrown back and the fringe moves with you. Especially beautiful with an open-back dress or top.

  1. Place the middle of the scarf at the front of your neck.
  2. Cross the ends behind your neck.
  3. Let both ends fall down your back.

Fringe looks best when it is long, 30 cm or more. Short fringe gets lost in movement.

How do you tie a scarf as a belt?

Waist focus · coat, dress, jumpsuit

A long scarf easily turns into a belt and defines the waist on a coat, a loose dress or a jumpsuit.

  1. Fold the scarf widthways several times to make a 5–8 cm band.
  2. Wrap it around your waist and tie a knot at the side or front.
  3. Let the ends hang loose.

How do you wear a scarf as a top?

Party, New Year’s Eve · wide-leg trousers

A long scarf can be tied into a halter-neck top. You need at least 200 cm and a fabric with a little stretch: stretch velvet holds its shape better than satin or cotton.

  1. Place the middle of the scarf across your chest and hold the ends under your arms.
  2. Cross the ends behind your back and bring them round to the front.
  3. Lift the ends up and tie them in a knot behind your neck.
  4. Smooth the fabric over your chest and check the fit in the mirror.

For extra confidence, wear a thin matching bralette underneath, like our Velvet Bralette Top Lure.

How do you wear a triangle scarf?

Bonus · no folding needed

A triangle scarf is the easiest of all to wear: there is no need to fold it.

  1. Over the shoulders. Point at the back, ends at the front, tied at the chest if you like.
  2. Around the neck. Point at the front, ends wrapped around the neck and tied at the back.
  3. On the hips. Point at the side, knot on the opposite hip, over a dress or trousers.

That is how to wear our Women’s Velvet Triangle Fringe Scarf Lure.

LooksWhat to wear with a long scarf in winter

A black scarf goes with almost everything. We style by what we call the REPULO’S one-accent rule: either the scarf is the star and the rest of the look stays simple and tonal, or the knot is understated and the focus is on the dress, shoes or jewellery. Two strong statements will only compete.

Coat and trousers

A single wrap or the Parisian knot, with the ends falling along the coat opening.

Evening maxi dress

The scarf over your shoulders in place of a stole, or with the fringe down your back.

Total black

Scarf, fringe hat and long fingerless gloves, all in the same fabric.

New Year’s Eve

A scarf top with wide-leg trousers, or the Velvet Halter Maxi Dress with Fringe Scarf Lure, which comes with the scarf.

The Lure collectionShop the story

Every piece in the Lure capsule is made from the same black stretch velvet (60% polyester, 38% nylon, 2% elastane), so the colour and texture match perfectly. We sew everything in our family atelier in Vinnytsia. Orders ship from Ukraine, outside the EU, so import duties or taxes may apply on delivery.

CareHow do you care for a velvet scarf?

Velvet is best hand-washed at a low temperature, without wringing. Use a steamer rather than an iron, and if you do iron it, always press through a cotton cloth. After washing, comb the fringe through with your fingers while it is still damp and dry the scarf flat.

Good to knowHow to tie a scarf: your questions answered

How do you tie a scarf so it doesn’t come undone?

Use the Parisian knot: fold the scarf in half, drape it around your neck and pull both ends through the loop. A fabric with a little stretch, such as stretch velvet, holds a knot better than slippery satin.

How long should a scarf be?

At least 180 cm for most styles, and 200 cm or more for a scarf top or belt. The Lure scarf by REPULO’S measures 250 cm including the fringe.

How do you tie a scarf around your neck under a coat?

Under a buttoned coat, a Parisian knot or a single wrap with the ends tucked inside works best. With an open coat, leave the ends hanging loose at the front to make your silhouette look longer.

How do you make a top out of a long scarf?

Place the middle of the scarf across your chest, cross the ends behind your back, bring them to the front and tie them behind your neck. You need at least 200 cm, and you can wear a thin matching bralette underneath.

How do you wear a fringe scarf without overdoing it?

Let the fringe scarf be your only statement piece: choose simple, solid-colour pieces with no prints or chunky jewellery, and keep the knot minimal so the fringe falls freely.

What is the difference between a long scarf and a triangle scarf?

A long scarf is narrow and worn around the neck or over the shoulders, while a square or triangle scarf can be tied at the neck, over the shoulders, on the head or around the hips. REPULO’S makes both in fringed velvet: the long Lure scarf and the Lure triangle scarf.
